Eternal
Information
announcement

Eternal has been a wonderful and magical place for many of us to write creatively with those we care for most. Unfortunately, as with all good things, it must eventually come to an end. That end is now. For the past year, Eternal has been a safe haven for open creativity, community, and fun, with like-minded individuals and incredible friendships. Alas, the sun has come and set, and will rise no more. Eternal is closed, indefinitely. Please collect your coding tables, profile information, and anything personal from the site. The site will be permanently shut down on February 1st. The boards are no longer open for posting, but all can still be accessed. This is not goodbye - it is merely "until we meet again". We are out there in the community, writing, celebrating friendship and the incredibly complex, intricately woven stories we've all created with the characters we so love. Please consider our affiliates (Fimbulvetr, Caeleste, Novus) to continue your incredible stories, or join us at Ourania.

Thank you for being a part of Eternal, and thank you for a wonderful year.

thank u, next [Any]

The Ice Age had been hard but not as hard as it should have been. Unfortunately for most, they couldn’t shift into a polar bear with thick layers of fur to protect from the cold, claws that could be used to shift ice and kill whatever game was left, he easily fell asleep in the snow. He had leaned mostly into the bear for support and survival. Giving into the bear had been easy, the last remnants of resistance had finally fallen away and as he fully embraced the bear into his being… He thrived.

He too had been stuck in Astraldune but kept to himself after Gryffen’s failed attempt of taking over. He doubted the red eyed bastard had really wanted the place to begin with, to give up so easily. He doubts his debt has been paid in the eyes of Gryffen and while he was lucky to avoid him in the barricade of ice, as soon as it shifted and broke down… He left.

There was nowhere particularly he wanted to go, nowhere he was needed. Perhaps he would travel back to Astraldune but for now… For now he just needed to breathe and roam and be somewhere else. He hadn’t seen Ellyse, still blind to the fact that she was around. Or perhaps he simply pretended to be blind to the signs of her, living in denial. While his madness had been stripped from him, his heartbreak still lingered. Delphine had gone as well and so he was alone once more. Just him, the bear, and their thoughts.

For most of the time, he thought of the words of the god that had “Blessed” him. The heart incased in ice within him, that could release him from his pain one way or another. If his heart did not melt, if he did not learn to love again (either himself or others), it would turn to stone and kill him. Perhaps death was an easier choice. What was the point of resisting it really, it seemed so pointless now.

He moves quickly in his natural form, having been in bear mode for so long it was refreshing, hooves crunching the mixture of snow and sand beneath his hooves as he slips from the desert and then emerges from the cavern to the fresh salty air of Eventide. Closing his eyes, he breathes deep and slowly exhales. The bear within becomes restless, smelling the sea and wanting to plunge in the cold depths but the stallion resists the call and stays put. The bear can wait a bit longer, it’s his turn for freedom now.

you're alive in your madness, in love with the night
The ice age had taken its toll on her.

As the divide between Sol and the mainland broke, shattering into nothing, she left. Truly, it was because of the memories - the hunger, the thirst, the loss of both her brothers. All were too much to bear, and frankly, she was not quite sure if she would return to Sol anytime soon. It was better for herself, and for the bird within her, to be freed from the land of eternal light.

The firebird perches on a barren tree, fiery feathers tucked neatly at her sides, golden eyes scanning the earth for any signs of life. Her avian form is a harsh contrast against the gray and white landscape, but she knows spring will soon come. She feels much better, now that the snow was beginning to melt and the animals began coming out of hiding. It was comfortable enough for her phoenix form to fully show itself, for her to hunt small rodents or catch fish hiding beneath the remaining ice chunks. Iset is content.

For awhile, there are hardly any other equines. Until she spots the flaxen coat of another, and her heightened eyesight takes him in - a lithe stallion with a plethora of scars across his body, much like her own. The firebird spreads her wings, taking off towards him in a flurry of flames.

Iset shifts back into her horse form with ease, just as she reaches him. She nickers to him, and trots up confidently. The winter had taken so much from her, but it could never take her spark. "Hello," She says, keeping pace with him as he canters. "I'm Iset."

Ledger

For a moment, with that closed eye and the beast groaning with longing within him, he lets himself briefly become lost in his own memories. It can’t be helped, this self torture. He doesn’t know any other way to be. Counting his internal wounds on a long list that seems to never end. Today though… Today his thoughts turn to Magnus. He can’t tell what upsets him most… The fact that his father’s features are starting to blur in his memory or the fact that he’s starting not to care. The one thing he can remember is the golden burn of Magnus’s gaze, the depth of sadness there that his own son seemed to inherit through the bloodline. Perhaps it was a curse to be a child of Magnus, perhaps they had all been doomed from the start. He doesn’t even know if his father still lives though the nightmares a Dark God had once implanted within him still lurk vividly in his mind.

Just another hole of disappointment, anger, and sadness he can’t fill. For a flicker of a moment, he wonders what Magnus would have made of it all. Of Ellyse.. Of him. Would he have been angry or disappointed? Or would he have not cared at all?

When he opens his own gold flecked eye there is a flash of color headed his way. He doesn’t flinch and his gaze is cool and collected as the firebird spreads it’s wings and then morphs before him. He had long grown use to such things, to other shifters like himself, that it doesn’t surprise or startle him in the least. The only thing that makes him raise a brow is the smile on her lips. The fiery creature she shifted from seems entirely fitting to the coloring of her body, the flame in her mane and tail, most of all the spark in her eye. He can’t help himself from raising a corner of his lip in amusement. The first time in a long time that he had found anything worth smiling about.

As she trots towards him (head held high and a strut of confidence), he starts moving himself as if to put space between them. He’s not sure why, something about her heat makes the bear within him uncomfortable. Makes his frozen encased heart pulse strong enough it hurts. He can feel her eyes on his many scars (the claw marks, the brand of constellation, the missing eye hidden beneath his snowy forelock, the x across his chest) and already assumes the questions beneath her gaze so he keeps himself moving even as she keeps in time with him.

Iset. Her name is Iset. Fitting somehow with her twisted horns and flame licked skin. His good eye flicks over her own scars before settling on the path before him. They ravage her body just as badly as his own and he realizes that he now has questions of his own bubbling on his tongue. Instead, he finally offers his own name after realizing the length of silence that has stretched between them. ”Ledger.” The bear within him still calls for the sea at their side but he continues to resist. Slowing his gait, knowing he's being incredibly rude and awkward with this unexpected company, he finally comes to a halt and faces her. ”Why a bird?” He finally blurts out, knowing himself what a personal question that might be but not knowing what else to say.

you're alive in your madness, in love with the night

Iset isn't sure of what to make of him.

She cannot quite sense what it is about him that makes the bird within her retreat, what it is that makes her uncomfortable in his presence. The bird, not quite melded with her, does not have its fiery talons sunk into her enough to make her unable to resist it though. She ignores the bird - though it struggles and fights within her chest - and continues to keep pace with him, careful not to come to close (it seemed he would rather keep the distance, besides). She can see socialization is not something that came so easy to him - whether this is from lack thereof or just her, she does not yet know - and she gives him his time to respond to her.

A grin graces her pursed lips as he finally reveals his name. Ledger - she commits it to memory, golden gaze flashing over to take him in again. Handsome, in his own right, and more questions form on her tongue as she takes in his singular eye, his constellation-shaped scar, and the X that crossed down his chest and through his heart.

His question makes her laugh. As they halt, she tilts her head and wrinkles her nose playfully. "Why not?" She asks, a huge smile forming across her face. "I guess the gods did what they do with anyone...they saw a fire in me, that could not be tamed. A bird whose wings cannot be clipped." Iset moves closer, her smile fading as she stares into his eye. "What did they give you?" She asks bluntly, not quite realizing the rudeness in her tone, though she meant no harm in it. Something about him...it intrigued her. She wanted - needed - to know more...no matter how much the bird protested.
